Without a doubt this will be the longest adventure I have
ever taken. I will be a sail trainee on a voyage around
the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Picton Castle.
From the
Picton Castle website: "Ever since we first found and
sailed the Picton Castle from Norway towards Nova Scotia in 1993
we have longed to sail the ship back to Europe. Now after four
world circumnavigations, trips all over the U.S. East Coast, the
Great Lakes and the Canadian Maritimes, that is just what we are
going to do. The Picton Castle is sailing to Europe and making
the 15,000-mile circumnavigation of the Atlantic Ocean."
The 284-ton Barque Picton Castle is a traditionally rigged
and operated sail training ship dedicated to making voyages
around the world under square sail. As a training ship, all
those on board work, stand watch, and learn the way of a
square-rigged sailing ship. Workshops are conducted in wire and
rope rigging, sail making, boat handling, navigation, and
practical seamanship. The ship also delivers much-needed
educational material and other supplies to the remote islands
she visits. The Picton Castle is outfitted to the highest
standard with safety gear and equipment.

The summer of 2010 will be the national
celebration
of 100 years of scouting in America. The 2010 jamboree
should be a larger event than past jamborees, which usually have
about 40,000 participants and 10,000 staff with 8,000 to 10,000
visitors each day. The jamboree will run from July 26 to August
4, 2010. It is attended by scouts from all over the United
States and from the World.
Since I have not missed any National Jamborees since my first
one in 1977, I don't plan on missing this one.
More information will be available as the dates get closer. |
